I have enjoyed learning about your mattresses and their construction. Please can you explain why so many different layers of different materials are needed and what the purpose of each layer is?

Hi Andrew,

Wow, where to start!
Excellent question but I could end up taking you through some serious detail in this response.  John has written an excellent set of posts on the construction method of mattresses found in mattress construction here.

A quick answer that may help is that each of the layers helps build up a mattress profile.  So each layer, whether it be springs or fibres gives both support and comfort to a mattress.  The individual layers help give a more refined feel than say a massive thick layer of one material.  It’s very specific in the way these layers can build up to provide various feelings in the mattress.  For example, horse hair is very resilient and bounces back quicker than say wool. So using this as a layer gives slightly more bounce than pure wool.  Wool, on the other hand, can give a really soft sink so if you profiled this on top of other materials you could have a supportive spring unit but with a soft sink comfort or top layer.

Johns articles will explain each of the fibres used and detail on what they achieve.  Another good tip is to decide what kind of feel you want in the top layers of the mattress and then give us a call on 0161 437 4419 to assist.  We state all the components and feels on each of our products so you can see in each product the weight range and feel it will give you.

Hope that helps!
