Hi Brian,

Thanks for letting us know of your findings. It is really worrying when furniture retailers are selling either substandard or potentially dangerous mattresses.  Fire retardant regulations are there for good reason and are not just another health and safety police issue.

In the 1970’s and 1980’s, there were a number of house fire incidents in which none FR furniture was shown to have dramatically increased the fire uptake time in homes, ie the time when a fire starts to how quickly it spreads, leading to some serious fatalities.

We have no powers ourselves to approach anyone choosing to sell mattresses or bedding like this.  What we can do is help to educate the public on what they should look for with their labelling and products.  That is why we have a clear post on what to look for in a mattress to check its fire retardant.  The FIRA also have plenty of guidelines to help anyone who is unsure.

Many thanks for your comment and please pass on our link to anyone you think would benefit from seeing what to look out for in FR labelling.

Kind Regards

Michaela
