TAKE OUR MATTRESS QUIZ

Similar mattress to Dunlopillo sovereign mattress

Gay Barker asked

I am around 10st and 5ft7. My husband is around 13st 7 and about 5ft 10. We currently sleep on a standard double Dunlopillo sovereign mattress + slatted base which we have found fine until fairly recently. Unfortunately I now feel the cold terribly and my husband overheats in bed. I like an electric blanket but my husband finds it not only too hot (even when his side is cold) but also finds it uncomfortable to sleep on. We also disagree about the weight of our duvet for the same reason.
Ideally, we would have a mattress each (but not zipped) so that I can have a single electric blanket and we would have 2 single duvets of different weights.
I have several related questions:
1. Do you think that we would be comfortable on 2 x 2ft6″ beds or should we go for 2 x 3ft beds (a stretch in our small bedroom but just about possible?
2. Or would be better having a single base with 2 unzipped mattresses? If so, what size?
3. How could we avoid the beds or mattresses drifting apart?
4. Can you think of any other problems we might face? It is such an important decision and we need to get it right!
By the way, we would want a divan base with storage.
5. Is it possible to have a base with drawers where the 2 mattresses would slightly slot in, to prevent drift?

Thanks for taking the time to provide so much info. I will try my best to answer all of your questions.

At the body height and weights, you have provided you are both a medium spring tension. This will support your body weights correctly. From there you can focus on how you would like the mattress to feel in the comfort layers. This is usually based on your own personal preference for a soft/medium/firm feeling mattress and also by using your sleeping habits. Your sleeping habits do dictate the type of mattress that you choose. Side sleepers need to avoid anything too firm in the top layers. The reason for this is that it will cause pressure point pains in places such as your shoulders, hips and knees etc. Front sleepers need to avoid anything too firm in the upper layers to support the curve in the spine adequately.

Are you looking for a zip and link or would you be looking for two individual mattresses to be used on the same base? I would recommend using a zip and link mattress as this will not allow for any of the issues you are concerned about (i.e the mattresses drifting apart)

The mattresses in our Artisan range would all be suitable for use with an electric blanket. This will then allow for your husband to have a much cooler sleep surface benefitting from the natural fibres used in the Artisan range. It will be the best of both worlds as you will be kept warm as you are able to use your electric blanket to keep you warm.

Unfortunately, we don’t make any bases like this. A standard divan will be suitable if you went to the zip and link option as this would then enable the mattress to sit as one piece.
