John Lewis naturals mattress feels uncomfortable

Tanya asked
31st January 2015

Hi, I’d really appreciate your thoughts on our situation. My partner and I are both about 5 ft 8, he weighs about 11 st and I weigh just over 10 st, but I have a sort of hourglass shape – wide hips, smaller waist, broad shoulders. My partner always sleeps on his front but rotated slightly with an extra pillow under his torso. I sleep both on my side and my back, usually falling asleep on my side. We bought this new mattress recently from the John Lewis natural collection range: We’re just going into our 4th week with it, turning and rotating it every week as instructed. But it hasn’t felt comfortable to me and I have been getting awful muscular aches and pains on the sides of my ribcage when I wake up in the mornings. It feels like I have flu or bruising!

It dies down after a few hours of being up and moving about. At first I thought maybe it was all part of the adjustment period, but as times goes on I’m wondering if it may just be too hard/firm a mattress for me, even though we tried out lying on lots of them in store before deciding on this one. It’s looking like we might have to return it for a refund or exchange, but I feel like I’ve no idea what we would exchange it for or try next. Any thoughts/advice/recommendations would be gratefully received!

Hi Tanya,

Thank you for your question.

Unfortunately, there are no published specific details of the upholstery layers by way of GSM (grams per square metre) in respect of your current mattress, making any recommendation or opinion hard.

What I would say, however, is that as you are unaware of how long the mattresses you tried out had been on display, they could have been tried out by quite a number of people over time making the mattress softer than if newly made.

With your body weights, we would have advised a medium tension spring and if this differs from the tension supplied, it may be worth asking for an exchange for the correct tension.

The firmness of the mattress will also be affected by what type of base you have placed the mattress on.

If on a platform base, this will make it firmer than if placed on a sprung base and it may be that rather than a replacement mattress, you may need to look at replacing your base.

In any event, you must advise the retailer of the issues you are experiencing and seek some advice and a resolution, which may mean a replacement, but again as there is no specific information regarding composition.

The closest products the John Lewis Natural Collection, would be our Artisan range. These are mattresses that are natural fibre and are, all pocket sprung and certain ones in the range come with a calico encased pocket spring unit.

I trust that this helps in some way, kind regards Mike. 0161 437 4419
