How long should one expect a pocket sprung mattress to last
I bought a 3ft pocket sprung mattress approx 20 years ago. I didn’t realize at first that I was supposed to turn it every week and have rather worried about that ever since. I subsequently turned it fairly regularly but this is getting too difficult for me. I am 78 weigh 7st5 and have osteoporosis. Foam mattresses don’t appeal – I gave away a new foam pillow once because I couldn’t bear it making me keep my head in one part of it. My mattress is comfortable enough and only shows a slight indent from where I sit up on it. Do you advise changing it please and what is less heavy if anything. Would a topper be the solution?

First of all, congratulations on having had the same mattress for so long without having to replace it. Unfortunately, it would appear that your current mattress is reaching the end of it’s life and a replacement is probably the best option. Toppers are used primarily to provide that extra comfort layer or to soften the feel of a mattress which may be feeling too firm. The application of a topper on your current mattress is not going to resolve the dip, in fact it will also dip in the same area.
Given your light body weight and the fact that, if you have a turnable mattress, it needs to be light, we would suggest viewing the Origins Comfort 1000, which although it has a standard medium tension spring unit, does have soft man made upholstery layers providing the softer comfort required. It will also be lighter than any other products in our ranges, making turning less of a problem.
