Mattress toppers essential ?

Marilyn asked
5th September 2016

I have been looking for a new bed and was leaning towards the artisan 1500 (£1230 for double) or Artisan naturals (although I have some concern about allergies). However, if it is essential for the longevity of the mattress to have a topper, this would add £275 or £370 to the price of the bed, making it unaffordable (for me). I therefore looked at the Origins 1500 which would be £680 plus a latex topper at £370 -a total of £1050. But, looking at the Origins pocket latex, that would be £890 with a 7 year guarantee compared with 3years on the Origins 1500. It is not turnable which I thought was not recommended ? So although your website contains a huge amount of information, I have ended up more confused than ever ! I have read your answer to a similar question which said to try the mattress for a couple of weeks first but that still means finding extra money. Can you help ?

Hi Marilyn,

Thank you for your question.

Whilst it is true that topper will help extend the longevity of your mattress it is not essential you have one. A protector, however, is essential and can be picked up relatively cheaply. It’s entirely a subjective choice.

A mattress protector should be the very least of your efforts to help reduce the damaging effects of sweat and other fluids during your time spent in bed. A mattress topper is a great way to increase the comfort layers of your mattress making the mattress feel softer. They also help to reduce the wear and tear put on your core mattress. A good rule of thumb is to match the materials of the topper to those within the core mattress though this is not mandatory.

If you find you want to tweak your bed you could add a topper, but this is only for a tweak. If your new John Ryan mattress is unsuitable you can either exchange it or ask for a full collect and refund. People who want to add toppers to our range are usually doing it for an extra luxurious slightly softer sink. They would never be considered essential.

Hope that helps but please do not hesitate to telephone our office for further advice/guidance.

Kind regards Julie
