Protecting a mattress

Rob asked

Hi, my question is a little off topic but related to mattresses. I understand if you can’t or won’t answer. I occasionally suffer from very bad night sweats. What would you recommend to protect my mattress? We currently have standard cotton bedding and a while fibre topper, but it soaks through to the mattress, which can’t be good for it. Would you recommend something like Coolmax? There’s also an American brand called Wicked which try to fix this, but they aren’t cheap. Again, apologies if this isn’t your expertise. Many thanks.

Hi Rob,

This is not an area that I have a great deal of expertise in, however, the type pf protection available for such problems is usually in the form of rubber. Unfortunately, whilst this may protect the mattress, it may also generate heat, which then results in the night sweats being more severe. In that respect, it appears to be a no win situation.

I note that you have a white fibre topper, but that this does not offer the protection required for your mattress. The difficulty you will have is that if you place a non-porous barrier between your topper and the mattress, this will tend to retain the fluid on the top meaning that sleep is likely to be a very damp experience, which is clearly not suitable. Perhaps a 100% cotton topper may assist in reducing the heat element which in turn may reduce the level of sweating.

It may be worth investigating who supplies protection for hospital mattresses as they may have a solution for you. I am sorry I cannot be more positive.

Kind regards
