TAKE OUR MATTRESS QUIZ

The perfect mattress for us, 18 stone and 15 1/2 stone side sleepers

Paula Doran asked

Hi, i’ve not had much luck with choosing my last 2 mattresses. They have both been superking size. One was a Mammoth foam mattress which we changed as it ended up having a hump in the middle running from head to toe between my husband and myself and it felt like we were lying on a constant slant. The current one purchased August ’17 is a Hypnos mattress with an Alpaca pillow top. This has ended up the same way as the Mammoth one which is very disappointing considering the cost of each. Where are we going wrong! Is it all to do with our weight? Have we chosen a mattress which is too soft? Our weights are 18 stone & 15 1/2 stone, heights 5’8″& 6’4″. I suffer from arthritis in my lower back. We would both be side & back sleepers. Can you suggest something for us that won’t end up having a hump down the middle and that we can easily turn over on. We feel that we are both having to haul our bodies just to turn over. I would really appreciate your advise when you have a moment. Many thanks, Paula.

Hi Paula,

Thank you for your question.

What base do you currently have? I ask because the hump you refer to sounds like the ‘hump back bridge effect’ which is caused by the middle support bar on a sprung slatted base. With larger sized mattresses such as Super Kings you must ensure you also utilise the middle of the mattress to ensure correct fibre settlement.

We would never recommend a Pillow top mattress. The main objection to pillow tops come into what you are expected to pay for them and the lifespan you will get out of them. Just like a one sided mattress, you will be unable to turn it so when the pillowtop layer becomes indented and worn, you will eventually have to replace the entire mattress even though the spring support will be sufficiently OK. At this point, I must admit that Pillowtops with a Natural Latex comfort layer do not fall into this argument although price wise you will be expected to pay a lot more than for a non-pillow top version.

As you suffer with arthritis and are both side sleepers we would recommend something with a medium feel upholstery. Your body weights dictate that you should opt for a dual spring tension, medium for the 15 and a half stone individual and firm for the individual at 18 stone.

The Artisan Naturals is our most popular, unbeatable model with 85% natural fibres. Containing a huge GSM of fillings, including wool and mohair, on a Calico Pocket spring unit. This medium feel hand crafted mattress is where we stake our reputation as ‘The Mattress Specialists’. For spring tension you would select the medium/firm option. This would cost £1765.00 for a Super King size with a dual tension.
This is priced particularly low in comparison to more established brands in order for us to set the bar in comparing branded mattresses with similar components. If this is in the region of your maximum budget then you will be getting the best mattress you can buy. Please see below for a side by side comparison to the Vi Spring Regal Superb;
