TAKE OUR MATTRESS QUIZ

The right mattress to help with ankylosing spondylitis

Paul asked
16th August 2018

I am 6ft, weigh 13.5 stone. Currently have a 1400 pocket sprung medium mattress, double, 10 years old.
Get hot when sleeping and have had ankylosing spondylitis for 20 years – in bed, this equates to shoulder, back and knee pain, side sleeper, advice would be appreciated.
I currently sleep alone so partner issues aren’t part of my mattress selection thinking. I know it’s an important investment but funds are limited. Many thanks.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for your question,

At your body weight, I would recommend a medium spring tension mattress. This is shown by the table below

BodyweightSpring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kgMedium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg UpwardsFirm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call)Soft (1.2mm)

With you have Ankylosing Spondylitis, I would only advise to go for a soft in the comfort layer. This will then allow your body to sink into the upper layers of the mattress and still be fully supported by the springs underneath. In our Origins Range, you should take a look at the Origins Comfort 1000 this is the softest mattress in the upper layers we offer in this range. If you wanted a higher natural fibre count(and therefore a cooler sleep surface) You would need to have a look at the Artisan Range, and the Artisan Luxury.

I hope this helps,
