UK flame retardants

Tika asked
25th November 2016

What types of chemical flame retardants for mattresses used in the UK are considered safe? Could I end up buying a mattress made from natural materials which has nevertheless been treated with a flame retardant that is better avoided? I would like to buy an oekotex or certipur certified mattress but am finding those not widely available in the UK, is that because of the flame resistance requirements? Is there some other standard in the UK that I should look for, to reassure me about the quality of the entire mattress, including the flame retardant used? Also, your mattresses look great but I don’t want to buy a mattress without trying it first. Where can I try them?

Hi Tika,

Many thanks for your enquiry.

We cannot comment upon what flame retardants are used in other manufacturer’s mattresses, but what we can say is that wool as a constituent component has natural flame retardance qualities and for that reason our naturally filled mattresses do not have any other flame retardants applied to the fillings. They do however, have a cover which is treated with phosphorus and nitrogen to provide retardance on that element of the build.
