Vi Spring base compared to John Lewis base?

Natasha asked
16th July 2012

We have been looking at a Superking John Lewis Natural Collection Mohair Classic Mattress but don’t like the plastic draw saddles on the corresponding divan base. Why oh why do they put these on so visibly and absolutely ruin the look of an expensive piece of furniture?

I prefer both the look and the fabric range of the ViSpring base I have seen, where there is no plastic edging to the drawers. I have been advised not to mix and match manufacturers, to avoid any “blame Issues” that may arise if there is a subsequent mattress problem. We could buy a non-sprung Vi-Spring base but have been told this decreases the mattress longevity. AND there is a slight size discrepancy – Vispring base 182cm, JLP mattress 180cm. Have you been asked this query before and what would be your advice to get the mattress we want combined with the aesthetic look we want?

Mix and match or compromise on something?

And do you have an equivalent!?

Thanks very much. .

Hi Natasha.

Good point.

However, it is all price related.

The Vi Spring Prestige base for a double at John Lewis is currently £950 [Aug 2012] The True Edge Superking Base at John Lewis (we assume by Harrisons) is £599 (Aug 2012).

I personally cannot see any reason why one manufacturers mattress cannot be used on another manufacturers base but, I would be inclined to get each manufacturers approval by doing so.

There is another comment on this site by someone who used a Vi Spring mattress on a sprung slatted ottoman.

Vi Spring advised them that to avoid any warranty issue they had to use pegboard and a mattress pad of sorts (quite good advice).

A size discrepancy of 2cm really is nominal and once your bedding is in place you will never notice this.

Finally, we would have no concerns whatsoever if you used our mattress on someone else’s base and incidentally, our bases too have the drawer corner saddles applied (sorry).

Kind Regards Gary
