Thanks for your quick response guys - I don't know how you keep up with it all.

We are absolutely keeping your Artisan in mind - as you know- it has been a task just finding something to compare it with.

We just need to take a little bit of time to reflect.

Thanks again for your help - Michael

Hi again Michael.

Take as long as you need.

Now you are armed with all the neccessary information your task has been made a lot easier.

For other readers that are faced with a similar dilemma, it really becomes a simple mattter of getting the most for your money - the actual brand or label becomes quite superfluous.

despite there being literally thousands of mattress models, the actual make up of a mattress falls into less than a couple of dozen composite components namely = Polyester / Foam / horsehair / Cotton / Wool / Mohair.

How these components are used and more importantly - how much of each are used - will indicate the quality of the mattress.

The raw price for these materials are fundamentally the same for each manufacturer and so 'Extras' such as the quality of fabrics, the quality of finishing, the quality of the spring support etc, then becomes the crucial determining factors or the compromises you will have to make to determine which best suits your budget.

However, this basic simplicity also has its caveats.

Raw materials also come into various grades.

Just because a mattress is described as having a 1200gsm layer of wool for example, does not mean that all mattresses described as such will be utilising the exact same wool upholstery.

Vi-Spring as an example describes [some of] their wool upholstery as Shetland Wool.

Harrisons describe [some of] their wool upholstery as British sourced wool and so on.

Many manufacturers [and we are talking a good 90% of] puchase these component parts from only a handful of specialist suppliers and so theoretically, the actual differences would be minimal.

It is then up to you to determine whether you are prepared to pay significantly more for the higher grade of product.

Many times, there will be no reason to - the difference between Long Stranded Black Horsehair and Long Stranded Horsehair for example.

This simple breakdown might explain the reasoning why the vast majority of manufacturers do not promote their products by content and weight.

if they did, you would see all to clearly that the actual differences between products are at best - nominal.

John and Ryan.
