A customer asked

My son needs a new mattress but is at a loss as to what he should get.

He is 6' 3" and plays rugby, he is 93kg and has lower back ache if he sleeps on a poor quality mattress.

He wants a King size and his budget maximum is £400, could you please give me your suggestions for him.

Thanks .

Hi Lindsey.

Unfortunately, £400 for a Kingsize mattress falls on the rather low side.

How much to spend on a double mattress? What can I expect for my money?
Under £500 Will not get you much at best a 13.5 gauge open coil/cage sprung with a thin polyester layer or a solid foam mattress.
£500 Entry level spunbond springs with some form of synthetic upholstery. Usually one sided mattresses.
£750 The beginnings of a basic pocket springs unit with 800 – 1000 count. No substantial amount of filling other than foams and synthetic materials. Two sided models.
£1000 Should get you away from most low ranges and into the mid-range pocket spring models.
£1250 Should get you a decent pocket sprung mattress with some Natural Fibre content.
£1500 Should get you many manufacturers mid-range models with Natural Fibres
£1500-£2000 Should get you a Hand Made primarily Natural Fibre Quality Mattress
£2000+ You should expect 100% Natural Fibres and Traditional Hand Made Construction Method.
£5000+ A Bespoke Hand Made Sleep System, High-end Spring Units & Featuring the Worlds Most Luxurious Natural Fibres.

Memory Foam on pocket springs will usually be all that you could feasably get for this price from a High Street store and then the quantity of memory foam would be dubious to say the least.

Our Origins Reflex falls within the budget (£520 Nov 2018) and even though I would be quite confident that this will suit him perfectly, his weight (although nicely balanced with his height) would make me inclined to add a further layer in the form of a mattress topper to give additional protection to the actual mattress.

Alternatively, to keep your budget precise, you can look to get a basic pocket sprung mattress for around £250 (look at mattressman.co.uk) and add a substantial comforting topper to add to what will be a minimal comfort layer.

Hope this helps Lindsey.

Kind Regards Gary
