A customer asked

Hi We currently have a Hypnos mattress which my wife hates for being too firm (it's a medium).

We therefore need to change it and had seen and tried a Burgess 3000 natural, which we both liked.

I would be interested in your thoughts on Burgess and as to whether you had a similar product.

Many thanks n

Hi David.

I used to rave over Burgess' mattresses.

I used to hold them up as one of the last UK manufacturers who offered a traditionally built, supremely well-crafted mattress that came from an unrivalled heritage.  I used to stare wide-eyed and breathless at the quality of the hand side stitching which represented an inverted B.  I also remember (with extreme embarrassment) going to their old factory in Manchester trying to get a supply of their products as I had this great idea of selling beds on the internet.  Of course, the kindly gentleman I spoke to took my name and number, but as I walked out the door I had a feeling I would not be hearing from him any time soon.  Burgess Beds, in my opinion, should be amongst your considerations if you are looking to buy a quality Bespoke mattress.

However, as with any traditionalist, they cannot rely on Bespoke orders to keep their business afloat.  Their move to modern industrial units in Haslingden probably had something to do with their need to offer well-made beds but using mass-produced springs/" title="pocket spring">pocket spring units such as the Air Suspension Pocket Spring Unit (Burgess refer to this a the Binary PS) you are looking at.  And it is with some sense of sadness I see this traditionally English manufacturer, with an enviable heritage going down this particular route when they had every opportunity to produce an affordable range of traditionally built mattresses that could have represented the best of British craftsmanship.

I am not aware of the retail price of this mattress and if you are seriously considering it I think it will be a better build pound for pound than many of their current competitors.  I would also put their Supernatural in your list of possibilities if the price difference isn't too prohibitive - it seems to have a better overall spec.  I would also push for a breakdown on component parts by weight. Again, sadly with Burgess, this should not have normally been necessary.

You could have deduced that the quantity they used reflected the quality - but ... this is not their bespoke mattress.

Finally, David, it wouldn't be fair if I did not tell you what we could offer.

Our Artisan range - Naturals / Luxury / Bespoke, will show you what we can do, each using traditional calico encased pocket springs.

Although from what you have said I would recommend you take a look at our Artisan Luxury, which is the softest in the comfort layers in this range.  We would need both of your body weights to say which spring tension would give you the correct support.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

Please do not hesitate to contact our friendly team on 0161 437 4419 if you would like any further advice.  Our office hours are 8 am to 8 pm Monday to Friday and 10 am to 4 pm Saturday and Sunday.

Kind Regards

Michaela
