A customer asked

Hi again I mailed you a couple of years ago regarding what was the right sort of mattress I should by due to my weight 25stone and the fact that I had been badly advised on purchases before> my main problem is that I spend a good deal of time sitting on the bed or obviously sleeping (badly). I find that all of my previous purchases have sagged at the side I sit an sleep on after a short period of time although I have a good quality base (ottoman king size) I can almost feel the hard base as the mattress is squeezed down if I sleep in middle of the mattress I do not feel the base at all which is not too bad but if I keep to my side I find I am almost sliding out of the bed in the night, and have actually slid out a couple of times. Unfortunately when I last wrote I could not wait for advise from you, and you must have been extremely busy as I heard nothing for a few weeks, so I bought my present mattress a 3500 pocket sprung which is as I describe above. Would a latex foam mattress be any good to me?

I feel I am wasting my pension on keep buying these mattresses , I seem to have tried most. I did have an adjustable bed at one time when they were very expensive and that had a Latex foam mattress on and if my memory serves me right I think this had some kind of foam mattress that was nice and firm and did not stay sagged at the side please help with your thought on this matter .

Hi Denise.

First of all mattresses are not designed to be utilised as sitting areas and so the expected 'sagging' of sides and edges will be expected and is not a fault of any mattress.

If you are prone to use the mattress as sitting area then you will have to adapt the area to suit.

Secondly, it is completely unreasonable to expect an off the shelf mattress to suit an above average bodyweight.

Usually budget is the reason why these purchases are made and unless the build is tailored precisely to you then obviously the problems you describe above will invariably happen.

So what can be done?

In this instance it sounds like your mattress has gone past the point of no return.

You can of course consign yourself to the fact that these type of purchases will have to be replaced sooner than normal (paying less but replacing more often) or for the sake of a decent nights sleep have a mattress made that is suitable for you.

I would recommend that you take a look at the Resilience mattresses in our range.

These are designed for heavier body weights from 18 st up to 30 st.

Hope this helps.

Kind Regards Gary
