What is similar to the Staples Carnoustie mattress?

A customer asked

I have a Staples Carnoustie 1000 sprung 4ft 6 mattress which I love. I had one before but due to my husband itching through certain cancer treatments, it meant that there was quite a bit of staining, so after he sadly died, I bought another one and It is just as comfortable now as it was when I purchased it in 2009. However, I bought a solid oak bed frame in a sale today and did not think to ask if it was 4 ft 6 until after the purchase. Unfortunately the bed only came in 5 foot!

So now I have been trying to get another Staples Carnoustie on line, but it does not come in the Staples range anymore. Also, the shop I bought my Staples from stopped selling Staples. So has the shop I bought my bed from today, even though they sold them a month ago. I just went on the Staples website and they have a range of different names and some have 4000 pocket springs. I thought the more springs the better, but after reading your information, I don't know what to do. I am not ten stone by any means and as my husband would have said if he were here, I was built for comfort not for speed. However, the 1000 sprung Carnoustie has been lovely. It has never dipped even if I don't turn it for a long time, it still doesn't leave a dip and is as firm now as when I first got it. So I am very reluctant to have to part with it. Staples do an Eleonor and that has 1000 springs, so I am not sure wheather to try that one in 5ft. Also, what is confusing is that all Staples now come with a zip and link on the 180cm mattress allowing each partner to choose the tension of mattress - medium or firm - that is most suited to their comfort and support requirements. As I am now a widow, this would not apply to me, so I don't see the point in why all their mattresses have this now. What do you suggest I do, try the Eleonor or go for a 2000 sprung as I weigh more than 10 stone?

Thanking you for your time. Kind regards Anne >

Hi Anne,

Thank you for getting in touch.

I also tried to find The Carnoustie online but nothing whatsoever turns up.

What we need to do is to find out the basic specification of the mattress in order to see what alternatives there are. It seems logical that if you were happy with The Carnoustie then it may be unwise to move significantly to another model.

If you give Staples a call they should be able to tell you what the nearest equivalent is. It's important to note that when you last bought your bed, Staples (then part of Hilding Anders) as a company was sold to Steinhoff UK (in April 2013) which may be why some of the old ranges are no longer available.

Their websites do not give out a contact number - only a contact email address. However, if you want to get in touch with them, this is the number to Steinhoff UK office in Huntingtdon [01480 576 064].

Please let us know what you find out.

John and Ryan.
