Will a sprung edge base make the mattress softer?

A customer asked

Hi-in the new year I'm looking to move my 9 year old daughter from a cabin bed to your Origins Comfort 1000 – 4ft divan. Is it possible (or even worth it) to upgrade the base to a sprung edge base to make it a little softer?

I like good beds but not sure if this is overkill (she's tall but thin-certainly not more than 5 stone. Her current mattress is open coil with a topper (as I found it awful on the rare nights I slept on it!). Many thanks Joanne

Hi Joanne,

Thank you for your enquiry on our website.  The Origins Comfort 1000  has the softest upholstery of the Origins range.  It also has pocket springs and not an open coil continuous spring system. It should not require the addition of a mattress topper for your daughter, given her current weight.  If she does find the comfort layers slightly too firm you can add a topper at a later date. We advise that she should try the bed for a short time before making any decision regarding the adding of a topper, which may not be needed.

A sprung base like our Artisan base will soften the overall feel of any mattress.  There is also the argument that a sprung base will prolong the lifespan of the mattress as there is an extra set of springs to take some of the impact from the sleepers body weight.
