A customer asked

Hi My 21 year old daughter suffers severely from fibromyalgia and finds a sprung mattress far too uncomfortable and makes her pain worse. I was wondering about memory foam either as a mattress or a comfort layer and the same with latex. Can you give us any advice to help us decide which is best?

Should we buy her a comfort layer to try first or a mattress?

Don't know if you have had previous enquiries from fibromyalgia sufferers but expect you probably have. Many thanks Anne >

Hi Anne,

Thank you for your question.
Mattresses that have good support and mold to one’s body help people with fibromyalgia sleep better by reducing pressure points. While soft mattresses may feel good initially, they have less spinal support, which over the course of the night causes more soreness. Mattresses made with foam or Latex tend to offer the ideal blend of softness and support for those with fibromyalgia.
Foam contours well to the unique curves of one’s body, but is not the most breathable material. As such, if you get hot easily or live in a warmer climate, you may be better suited by a mattresses with a top layer that helps keep you cool such as Latex.  Additionally, proper alignment of the spine is key and helps alleviate pressure on tender spots. A Latex mattress is perfectly designed for this and is clinically tested for pain alleviation.
It may better at this time for you to purchase a Latex topper made from 100% Natural Latex to add to your existing mattress as this may be all that is required to give your daughter a more comfortable sleep.   We do make Latex Toppers but these are made of medium density latex and would not be suitable for your daughter.  Please contact a Company called Latex Sense who make natural latex toppers in very soft and soft density latex.

I hope this assists but please do not hesitate to contact our office on 0161 437 4419.

Regards Julie
