How long does it take for a pillowtop mattress to fail?

A customer asked

Hi, just wondering what the timescale for a pillow top mattress to sink. Have just got delivered a Bespoke Opulence Supreme from Bensons for beds. After just 5 nights, it is like sleeping in a hammock and can feel lumps and bumps, so uncomfortable that I have gone into spare room to sleep. I am 5 ft tall and weigh just 9st. It's a zip and link superking. Hubby still persevering on his side even though he is waking up with sore back in morning. Wasn't cheap either, £2,100 including headboard. I have told the store but they say it's the mattress settling. Not so sure as its so bad. Am so disappointed, stressing and crying about it. I think it's a manufacturing fault. Now had the monster 10 days. Just want it out my home now. Still in spare room.

Hi Gloria,

As you are probably aware from reading our site, we would never advise anyone to purchase a pillow top mattress. As you have done so, you will need to enquire of the retailer, what the tolerances are for dipping, usually 2cm, but in any event, I would not expect the top to develop lumps and bumps in the fashion you describe so quickly after delivery.

If you are offered a replacement, don't opt for another pillow top. Alternatively, if you are offered your money back, please contact us for advice as to the most appropriate mattresses in our ranges.

Please let me know how you get on.

I am sorry I cannot be more specific in my response, kind regards Mike.
