Latex mattress odour

We have purchased a pocket spring mattress with a latex topper about 6 inches deep. Initially the latex topper had an extremely strong chemical smell. This has now dissipated somewhat (after about 6 weeks) but it is still unpleasantly smelly, and on the odd occasion we have slept on it we note that the smell is particularly strong when the topper watms up with body heat. Have only slept on it for a few hours because the smell is unpleasant. Is this normal? We really can't bear the smell.

Hi Barbara,

Unfortunately, some people are more sensitive to certain smells than others when it comes to mattress components. It's a really tricky subjective area as what smells neutral to one person can smell completely abhorrent to another.

That said usually the off-gassing which causes these types of smell should go in a few days in a well-ventilated room. When the topper warms up it could still be off-gassing again if you can smell the odour.

A smell that's stopping you sleeping on it is not normal as it sounds really extreme.

However, if the latex used is entirely synthetic then it's man-made from chemicals.  This may be why you may be experiencing the smell.

Unfortunately, you may experience this issue with a number of foams and components.

It may be best to look at a more natural fibre mattress or 100% natural latex if the smell if causing such problems.

We have only encountered a couple of customers who after a few days have still been sensitive to the mattress and this comes back to the point about some people having incredibly sensitive sense of smell. Must be brilliant in a perfumery but not so useful in this instance!

Usually, we advise that leaving the mattress well ventilated for a few days, or a couple of weeks of ventilation through the day, will remove any smell from packaging or any inert smells from dissipating.

Kind Regards Gary
