Zip and link - suitable bed base

Hi, we have bought a holiday let complete with furniture. There are twin slatted beds in one of the rooms and I wondered about using a zip and link mattress with them to give greater flexibility. The beds can sit side by side as the headboards don't stick out but there is a lip of about 2cm high on the sides of the beds to hold the mattress in place, can these beds still be used with a zip and link mattress, wouldn't the lip be felt through the mattress? If we used a mattress topper but underneath the mattress to lift the mattress up would that help to raise the mattresses up?, thanks
