Soft was too soft

Hi.
After thoroughly reading your website for advice I bought a softer mattress, as neither myself or my partner weigh more than 12 stone and wanted a softer feel, as we mostly sleep on our side. You do say that nowadays people are moving away from advising beds be as firm as they used to advise, and that a firmer bed should not be needed unless you are of generous proportions.
However after a year of the mattress settling, we now have terrible lower back problems. This was not apparent until about a year, which would obviously not fit into any return periods. We are now looking into medium to medium firm. The quest continues.
I just wanted to share this experience, as you website was very very helpful. I only bought fro Litvinoff and Fawcett in Hackney, as I have known them for decades and always bought from them, and they had a sale on surplus stock.

Hi Tristan,

I am sorry to hear that your are experiencing problems with the product you eventually opted for from another manufacturer. The advice we provide is general, but is tempered by reference to the products that we manufacture as we are unable to provide an opinion as to quality, construction and performance of other products if we are not advised which product it is and the specific details in respect of construction and upholstery are not available.

Whilst I am aware of the company you have purchased from, I do not know which model you bought and what the build specification is. Similarly, if the product you bought was from surplus stock, who knows if this had been on display prior to purchase, which could have a detrimental effect on the product some time after purchase. Although your body weights fall within the medium spring tension bracket i.e. 10 to 16st, you have indicated that your personal preference was for a softer feel.  You should look at a mattress in two parts - Support comes from the spring tension, this is based solely on an individuals body weight.  Comfort comes from the upholstery layers and is dictated by personal preferences and sleeping habits.

Spring Tension Wire diameter (Gauge) Weight Range
Soft 1.2mm Bespoke Tension (Please Call)
Medium 1.4mm Upto 16 stone
Firm 1.6mm 16 stone plus
Extra Firm / Orthopaedic 1.9mm 20 stone plus

Are you turning and rotating the mattress regularly to alleviate any specific settling in one sleep area? If not, doing this may remedy the issues you have at present.
Alternatively, if you are looking for a replacement,  I would suggest that you view the products in our Artisan range, some of which are comparable in feel to some Vi-Spring models.

Please call our office on 0161 437 4419 for more specific advice as to suitability.  Our office hours are 8 am – 8 pm Monday to Friday and 10 am 4 pm Saturday and Sunday.

Kind Regards

Michaela
