Replicating a sprung divan feel on a non sprung divan

Josh

Hello, after much trying out of mattresses in John Lewis and also comparing the feel of them when putting them on the floor, I have concluded that a sprung base actually makes a huge difference in terms of comfort and getting that 5 star hotel type feel. Therefore I am very much in favour of trying to replicate that feel, but the issue is that I am in a rented apartment which has a non sprung divan and there is not space to store it somewhere to buy a sprung replacement in its place. So I am now trying to find something suitable that can go on top of my firm divan to replicate a sprung divan. The closest thing I can find on the web is a thin Harrison 'under mattress', but that is all I can find which tries to achieve this goal. Do you have any other recommendations to achieve such a goal? The other thought I had was buying a topper with equivalent properties, but then there are lots to choose from and its hard to know what type and firmness will give a similar feel. Many thanks for any advice or recommendations.

Hi Josh,

Thank you for your enquiry.

It is very difficult to replicate the feel of a sprung base by applying any form of pad or topper, as these are not going to provide the same spring and give afforded by the springs in a sprung base. We are not aware of the construction or specification of the Harrison "under mattress" so cannot comment on whether that will provide the feel you are looking for, but from what you have said regarding storage of your existing base, if you buy a new one, it may be worth giving it a go.

Mattress toppers are specifically made to provide a softer, more comfortable feel for a mattress, which may be feeling a little firmer than you prefer and are not designed to be used as a pad to provide you with a springy feel by placing one under your mattress, this would just flatten the topper and provide no benefit whatsoever. Is it worth approaching your landlord and advising what you need and seeking some form of contribution from him/her on the basis that the base will be left in the property when you leave and subsequent tenants will benefit from it?

We are sorry that we have not been able to advise a solution to your issue, but hope that you will be able to resolve this and obtain some contribution from your landlord, kind regards.
