Is a new base necessary with a new mattress?
Good morning We have bought 4 beds from you over the past 20 years or more and been delighted with them Out present mattress is feeling a bit saggy after 9 years. We plan to replace it but do I need to buy a completely new bed base too? Thank you for your help and advice
Hi Sally,
Thank you for your question. A lot of companies require you to purchase a new base with a new mattress. They say you need a new base to validate the warranty. If there is nothing wrong with your base, there is no need to replace it. However, the type of base you put a mattress on can affect how the mattress feels.
A Pocket Sprung base will cushion a mattress. Our Artisan range of mattresses is designed for this type of base and you will get the described level of comfort. If you put them on a platform such as our Contemporary Platform Base or slatted base, this will firm up the internal support of the mattress. Putting a mattress that is designed for a platform base, such as our Origins range of mattresses, onto a pocket sprung base will give a softer overall level of comfort.
A slatted base may need to be tweaked to support your mattress correctly. A flat slatted base is better. If the gaps are less than 3 inches (7.5 cm) we recommend covering them with an old or cheap duvet or blanket to protect the upholstery layers on the underside of the mattress from indentations and possible staining. If the gap is larger, you would need to board over the slats to prevent the springs from settling in the gap and damaging your mattress.
Sometimes, with a sprung slatted base, the mattress can sit at the top of the arches rather than pushing them down. When this happens, you could roll into the middle, or it can look as if the mattress has sagged in the middle as there is no support for the centre of the mattress. An easy remedy is to place a piece of MDF or Plywood along the centre, bridging the two sets of arches, which will then support the centre of the mattress and solve the issue.
I hope this helps and if you would like any further information please do not hesitate to contact our office on 0161 437 4419.
Kind Regards
Michaela
