A customer asked

Hi there
Love your website and advice!
I'm looking for a medium feel double mattress for my husband (13 stone) and me (8.5-9.5 stone). We have an old fashioned bead stead with original sprung base which has no kind of top/mesh on top. Four questions for you!
1) We're on a budget (charity workers!) - our budget is £400 give or take, which I think points to your origins 1000 mattress, or is there another mattress you would suggest from your range? And do you have any of the returned/slightly damaged stock matching our needs that would mean we can get a better mattress for the same amount?
2) What topper would you recommend to prolong the life of the mattress given I think I read in one of your other blogs that polyester mattresses tend to flatten over time versus natural fibres which bounce back? Is there a natural topper we should go for?
3) Regarding the spring bedstead - I saw someone else called Karen wrote on a similar topic in your "The best tip I can give you about buying a mattress" blog so I read that plus this blog on slats.
If we want to give more stability for the mattress/retain the medium feel (As well as protect the mattress from the springs) then what would you advise for a layer between the springs and mattress? Would you advise the use of mdf/plywood/peg board on a sprung base bedstead or carpet or a matress topper or duvet? I can send a photo if helpful! Currently we have a poor quality mattress on there and is also dips in the middle when we sleep on it (might be the mattress, might be the sprung bedstead), so I'm keen to level the sprung bedstead.
4) Finally - out of interest - I love our bedstead as I ove the wooden frame, but wonder what the point of the sprung base was in the first place if we anyway have to put an underlayer to stabilise it? Or would it have originally come with an underlayer?
Many thanks in advance!

Hi Christina,

Thank you for your enquiry, I will deal with each of the points raised in order :-

1. The Origins Pocket Reflex 1000 is nearer your £400 budget, but will provide a firm feel for people of your body weight and unless that is the feel you require, I would not recommend this. The better alternative, in my opinion would be the slightly more expensive Origins Pocket 1500, which will provide you both with a medium feel and has 1550 GSM (grams per square metre) of upholstery for comfort.
2. I would not advocate the purchase of a topper until you have had you new mattress for at least fourteen days and you have got used to the feel.

To purchase a topper prior to or at the same time as the mattress may turn out to be an unnecessary expense.

We do not supply natural fibre toppers, but if you require one, a company called Soak and Sleep have several available.

3. The provision of some sort of barrier between the mattress and your sprung base is imperative in order to afford the mattress protection from the springs and avoid unnecessary ridging caused by the surface of the base. In you particular case, an old piece of carpet or old duvet should suffice in providing this protection whilst still retaining the springy feel of the base.

4. The under layer you refer to is not for stabilisation per se, although in the case of MDF sheeting this will stabilise the frame, but for protection of the mattress. It may be that the original frame came with some form of protective layer which has been lost over time.

I trust that the above answers your queries, but if you require any further advice, please do not hesitate to call our office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards Gary
