A customer asked

Hi John, Thank you nfor putting together such a superb and honesr website to help us naviate our way through the minefield that is mattresses!

I'm looking for a kingsize for myself (11 stone). I've tried a memory foam and wasn't impressed, so I'm looking at PS. I like the Abaca Monmouth as I like the idea of no chemicals and supporting our British sheep farmers, but there's a hefty price tag attached. Specs are: 1400 PS framed with butterfuly clips to help support sides 1000gsm wool Layer of curled horsehair (no weight given) 500gsm layer of wool & mohair 500gsm wrap of wool & mohair Hand-tufted with wool Organic cotton cover No handles (they say handles can be added, but the mattresses are so heavy, they shouldn't be turned with handles as that might rip the cover.) Having tried one in Brighton, they do weigh a tonne...!

£1895 I'd appreciate your comments, Thank you, Anna .

Hi Anna, Thanks for your kind comments.

Very much appreciated.

This is quite a tricky question to answer as no doubt about it, I am going to say our Artisan Bespoke will be a better buy.

But why?

First of all, the main point that stands out is the total GSM [grams per square meter] of our Artisan Bespoke is a whopping 5100gsm - Both Sides!

John Ryan By Design Artisan Bespoke Vi-Spring Herald Superb
1 500gsm British Wool 1200gsm Blended British Fleece Wool & Cotton
2 1200gsm Blended British Fleece Wool and Cotton NA
3 Hairproof Cambric Cover Hairproof Cambric Cover
4 1200gsm Pure Horsetail NA
5 1200gsm Horsehair 1200gsm Horsehair
6 1000gsm White Cashmere Insulator 1000gsm British Fleece Wool
7 1600 Calico encased Pocket Springs [49mm] [1.28mm] 1476 Calico encased Pocket Springs [51mm] [Gauge: 1.42mm]
Total GSM 5100gsm 3400gsm

By comparison, the weights for the Monmouth that are listed is: 1000gsm wool + 1000gsm of wool and mohair.

As you point out the horsehair layer is not weighted and unless it is at least 2500gsm [unlikely] then by weight alone it becomes inferior.

However, in fairness, I do know of Abaca and of course Rhiannon.

They are a company who specialises in organic mattresses and cater to people who have oversensitivity to chemical additivers, odours etc.

and I would certainly not hesitate to contact them for more information if your requirements fall into this category.

As a sidenote with regards to price.

Just short of £2000 is not expensive for a natural fibre mattress.

You will be practically guaranteed a lifespan of ten years plus, coupled with a comfort level that is unparalleled to man made fibres.

Also bear in mind that when you consider the Vi Spring Chatsworth (nee Lynmouth) is retailed at around £3200 for similar content the value for money aspect becomes more apparant.

This was an interesting comment on how you justify worth versus value.

Please feel free to add further comment if necessary.
