Are Futon beds any good?

Thank you so much for your site! I just stumbled upon it tonight and am delighted... I just started looking for a bed today but your site has helped me to resist all these mad sales that are ending tomorrow!
I would like to know your opinion on futon beds/mattresses. I am not heavy (8 stone 8), and do not have a partner, so am just looking for a bed for myself. I tend to sleep on my stomach, but have always preferred really firm beds. Often in the summer I sleep on the floor (on top of a duvet), and love it. So I was wondering about a futon bed... or, what would you recommend? Thanks again.

We are not opposed to futon beds, but would advise that any mattress placed on such a bed will feel firmer than it would on a standard base.
I would also advocate placing some form of barrier between the mattress and the base to protect the mattress from ridging.
