Artisan mattress for sprung slats

A customer asked

John, We have just ordered a new base from Debenhams, an Ivory 'Dallas' upholstered bedframe. This has beech sprung slats. We are thinking about the artisan naturals but wanted some advice before ordering. My wife is about 8.5 stone, and complains our bed is too hard, and I am about 14 stone and don't find it too bad. The mattress is (wait for it) 16 years old, so is probably ready for a change. We both want a softer mattress so wondered whether a dual sprung mattress is the best way to go, and whether we should be looking for soft and medium or medium and firm?

I have no idea what the spec of the original mattress is but get a sense that is was medium to firm when first bought. Any advice gratefully received Alastair .
