Bed for child that bounces

A customer asked

Hi. I am very impressed with your website and all the information available. Our son has special needs and does tend to bounce on his bed. Having broken numerous beds (including metal ones) we have resorted to having a bed specifically made reinforced to withstand 'the bounce'. We are now in the process of finding a mattress for him (he is currently using a mattress from a different bed). We have looked at the larger suppliers of mattresses and don't really know whether we really are getting the bargain as we are led to believe and we do not want to purchase a mattress only to have to replace it sooner than we'd like. We are impressed with your website and wanted your advice. Our son is 18, 5' 5" and about 10st. His new bed is a double (4'6") and has a recess (in which the mattress is placed) of approximately 6". Do you think your Origins Comfort 1000 Double would be suitable for us to purchase? And what is difference between that and Origins Pocket Reflex 1000 Double please?
Thank you.

Hi Elaine

The difficulty you have when purchasing from one of the high street suppliers is that the descriptions of the mattresses are vague to say the least and they do not provide you with the specific level of the upholstery layers by way of GSM (grams per square metre) which makes the decision all the more difficult to make.

The main difference between the Origins Comfort and the Origins Reflex is that the Comfort provides a soft but supportive feel and the Reflex provides a more firmer supportive feel.

John Ryan By Design Origins Comfort
1 750gsm Very Soft Polyester
2 500gsm Polyester Pad
3 One Inch Foam Insulator Layer
4 1000 Spun Bond Pocket Springs

Origins Reflex
1 750gsm Very soft Polyester
2 One inch reflex foam layer
3 270gsm Polyester
4 One inch reflex foam layer
5 1000 Spun Bond Pocket Springs

The reflex is the mattress we usually recommend for B & Bs because it is suitable for a wide range of body weights and is probably more suited to your son.

If your son bounces about on the mattress, this will clearly have a detrimental effect and under the circumstances, we cannot guarantee that it will not fail if bounced upon regularly.

I hope this helps, but if you require any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact our office on 0161 437 4419

Kind regards Mike.
