Best mattress for £800

A customer asked

Hi Mike, i'm in mattress limbo.
I have a budget of £800 max to get a double mattress. I quite like the feel of 4000 JL natural and JL 1400 ortho and like them both having tried them. I am 12st and my wife 7st and we are both side sleepers. The beds were both firm and my wife prefers a firm mattress. My quandary is that i seemingly also prefer firm from my brief testing but reading here and many places about people with lower back issues, like i have, and as lightweight couple firm is not recommended.
I have noticed that sleeping in very expensive, plush, softer hotel beds makes my back even worse when I'm travelling. Any advice in this matter (albeit i appreciate its horses for courses) and any alternatives to the JL's mentioned above? Thanks in advance. Stephen

Hi Stephen,

Thank you for your questions.

Firstly, I must confirm that I cannot provide any opinion as to quality or performance in respect of the John Lewis models mentioned as there are no published details of the upholstery layers by way of GSM (grams per square metre). This also means that I am unable to suggest a comparable mattress from our ranges.

However, having said that, if you are looking for a mattress with natural fibres used in the upholstery, all our Artisan mattresses have these.

Given your budget, body weights and preferred feel, I would suggest that you look at the Artisan 1500 in a medium spring tension as this will feel firm for your wife and medium for you. The Artisan 1500 is a hand crafted natural and man made fibre mattress giving exceptional comfort and support for the price. This mattress simply can’t be beaten given the components and price.

John Ryan By Design Artisan 1500
1 500gsm Wool
2 600gsm Rebound Poly Cotton (50/50)
3 700gsm Polyester
4 600gsm: Rebound Poly Cotton (50/50)
5 700gsm Polyester
6 1200 gsm Cashmere Hair Pad as Insulator
7 1500 Spun Bond Pocket Springs (Soft/Med or Firm)
Total GSM 4300gsm

Although, if you are happy with synthetic fillings, there are some of our Origins mattresses that may suit.

What you need to bear in mind is that, contrary to popular belief, it is not correct that if you have back issues you should opt for a firm mattress. The Institute of Chiropractors have even issued advice in this regard.

If you are unsure as to which mattress to opt for please call our office on 0161 437 4419 for more specific advice as to suitability.

Kind regards,
Amy.
