Best mattress for older person with arthritis.

I have been having a dreadful time with mattresses over the past couple of years. First I bought a Hypnos Wool Origins 6. This mattress was comfortable although the constant turning was difficult for someone with arthritis.  After 18 months however the mattress had sagged and springs broke (I am not very heavy). Mattress was declared faulty by Hypnos and refund made to the company I bought it from.

I then decided to go for a Medium tension no turn mattress from Sleepeezee, the Centurial 01.  I haven’t slept for 2 weeks now and am in considerable pain. The mattress is rock hard and if this is medium I hate to think what firm would be like. I can’t return it and so am stuck.

The upshot is I will now have to buy another mattress but do not want to make any more mistakes. I need something that would be suitable for an elderly side sleeper with arthritis, something not too tall or heavy, so badly need advice. Also how to dispose of an almost new £1,249 mattress.

Hi Ann,

Thank you for your question. I am sorry to hear that you are having such difficulty with your recent mattresses. It can be quite difficult when a medical condition limits your options.

Looking at your Sleepeezee Centurial 01 mattress, this mattress has soft wool layers in the upholstery (although GSMs are not given), which will cushion shoulders and hips for side sleepers. We would not recommend this soft upholstery mattress for front and back sleepers as sinking in too much in these sleep positions can cause lower back pain. A new mattress will always feel firmer as the upholstery layers are compacted during manufacturing and it takes you sleeping and moving around on the mattress to soften them. Adding a mattress topper can provide additional cushioning whilst the upholstery layers settle. This is a one-sided mattress that you only need to rotate which is much easier for sufferers of Arthritis. The dual layer of pocket springs will give the mattress softer support and a bouncier feel. Our softest mattress is the Artisan Luxury with a softer medium level of comfort, however, this would need to be turned over on a regular basis to even out the settlement of the upholstery layers. We do not recommend a one-sided fibre filled mattress as you can not prolong the mattress's lifespan with proper care and maintenance.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

The spring tension of your mattress is medium which should be based on your height and weight to give you the correct level of support. This would be the same no matter what the comfort of the mattress is which is determined by the upholstery layers on top of the springs and not the springs themselves.

I would recommend adding a thick mattress topper to your mattress to provide you with additional comfort whilst the upholstery layers are settling. If this proves to still not be soft enough for you, you would probably be more comfortable on a soft density latex mattress. You can sell your current mattress privately on sites like eBay or Facebook Marketplace if you can not return it under a sleep trial.

I hope this helps and if you would like any further information or would like to discuss your individual needs, please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards

Michaela
