I am building a shepherds hut where the base for the double bed is chipboard (with breathing holes if necessary. What is the best type of mattress for this base?

Hi Simon,

It's a very interesting question trying to find a suitable mattress for an outdoor hut, eco-home, retreat or office. The same mattress rule applies though regardless of the accommodation. The things you need to consider when selecting or making a base are:

1.Is the base sound and strong enough for the weight of the mattress? Our mattresses are very heavy due to the high GSM content and you can see the weights and sizes here.

2.Is the base going tp consistently support the mattress? Ie we advise part boarding over slats which can cause settlement and undue undulations in a mattress over time.

3.How will the base affect the feel of the mattress? We discuss sprung edge bases providing a slightly softer feel to a mattress vs a platform top base, like the one on your suggesting, here.

As for the mattress selection. Any mattress should be able to be used if the above 3 rules are followed. If it's a one-sided mattress you may want to use pegboard or provide some air holes to help ventilate the mattress.  A high quality two sided mattress however shouldn't need these as they should be turned monthly to ensure you get the longest lifespan out of such a matter and reduce any settlement.

We would need some more detail from you to provide one of our tailored recommendations though such as height, the weight of sleepers and the type of feel you're going for. If you want a place to start have a look here at our best sellers.
