Cleaning a Vispring mattress?

Our mattress is 27 years old - ok not new but very much like to clean it. Vispring don’t do this service. Is it a definite no no? Would we trash the mattress if it was cleaned? Appreciate some advice here. With many thanks.

Hi Annie,

Many thanks for your question about Vispring mattresses. They really are a wonderful company and one of the few remaining hand made mattress experts alongside ourselves and Savoir in the UK. It's fantastic to hear it is still going strong at 27 years, showing the true resilience of a proper hand made natural fibre mattress compared to cheap memory foam alternatives.

Yes, you can light clean a mattress if you do it with care yourself. There's no 'professional' way to fully clean a mattress so we are dubious if companies offer that service. Chemicals of any type will quite quickly damage a natural fibre mattress if too strong and any high moisture solutions can cause damp and erosion too.

1. Vacuum both sides carefully: The best way to clean the mattress is to firstly vacuum both sides with a small cleaning head from your vacuum cleaner. This is to remove surface dust.

2. Sponge off stains with soapy water: You can sponge off any light stains. We advise you do this with hot soapy water and aim to keep the mattress and stain as dry as possible, only using a damp not wet cloth.

3. Naturally air dry your mattress: We don't advise any stronger cleaning chemicals which can damage the natural upholstery fibres underneath the cover.
Also don't use any hair dryers or heat sources to dry the cleansed patches, air the room instead. Any heat can warp and damage the fibres causing inconsistencies in the mattress.

The best way to clean a mattress is by keeping it clean with monthly maintenance and care. We have a full details guide here on how to keep a mattress clean.

We hope that helps and gives you further mattress buying guidance. If you have any more mattress related questions please get back in touch on info@localhost or 0161 437 4419.

Sleep well
