Do bed frames & solid based change the feel of mattresses?
Will your mattresses be as comfortable on a wooden bed frame?
Hi Sandra,
Many thanks for your question about bed frames and mattresses.
A solid top bedframe or platform top divan will firm up the feel of any mattress. But it is only marginal. It's not going to take the comfort of a medium feel mattress in a firm or down to a soft. It's subtle but can help make the difference if a mattress is feeling slightly too forgiving in the top comfort layer.
Don't forget that a mattresses spring unit is purely based on your bodyweight. It does not relate to the overall feel of the mattress which is created by the upholstery layers also known as mattress comfort layers.
Likewise, if your mattress is feeling slightly too firm on a platform top divan or bedframe, then a sprung edge divan can soften it slightly to perfect the feel.
The one thing that mattress and bed retailers don't want you to know is that all mattresses are suitable for all bases. Some of the bases may need a slight tweak, like boarding over slats for a more consistent sleep surface. But essentially all quality mattresses are suitable for all stable well-made bases.
Don't be fooled by thinking certain mattresses need a bedstead or a special sprung divan. It's just marketing to flog you a new base along with your mattress.
If your bed base is in good condition without any damage then it should be fine to keep it. Change if for aesthetic reasons or to soften/firm up the mattress, but never because you think you have to.
If you have a slatted bed base you can read on how you can board over the slats to prevent them from damaging your mattress.
The video below will help you understand the confusion and difference between solid and sprung slatted bases.

What will make my mattress feel firmer putting it on salvage slots or putting on a box Spring
I’ve read lots of things on the internet and the stories change
Some say Solid slats make your mattress firmer some say a box Spring is better I am confused help me
Hi Michael,
Thank you for your comment. A box spring is similar to a reduced height pocket sprung base that sits on top of slats. This will cushion the mattress which will give it a softer overall feel. Slatted bases and platform divans provide a more supportive feel to the mattress.
How the base will affect the mattress depends on the type of mattress you have. Good quality natural fibre mattresses are designed to go on a pocket sprung base so these will have a slightly firmer internal support on a solid base whilst a mattress designed for a platform base will have a softer overall level of comfort. If you have a pocket sprung or box spring you can board over these with 3-5mm of MDF or Plywood which will give a slightly firmer feel. Boarding over slatted bases can also firm up a mattress slightly.
If the comfort layers of your mattress are too soft, adding a firm mattress topper may be benefical.
I hope this helps,
Kind Regards
Michaela
