Does my Sensaform Airstream Memory 6000 have fiberglass?

I was wondering if my Sensaform 6000 Airstream Memory had contained any fiberglass within the mattress itself because it has ripped apart and I have seen bad things about fiberglass and the inhalation of it

Hi Adam,

Thank you for your question. Unfortunately, your mattress from Benson's for Beds seems to have been discontinued. The Sensaform Airstream Memory 6000 is a one-sided mattress containing copper-infused memory foam, micro HD pocket springs and pocket springs, offering a medium level of support. The medium spring tension supports body weights up to 16.5 stone.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

Briton developed fibreglass in the Second World War and used it for aircraft and boats as a replacement for moulded plywood. It is a composite material, meaning that it is made from the combination of two materials with different physical and chemical properties. Fibreglass materials are reinforced plastic, composed of glass fibres embedded in a resin matrix. When combined they create a material which is specialised for a particular purpose. Often the fibreglass found in mattresses is not in the mattress itself, but in the cover that goes around it.

Mattresses in all countries have to conform to regulations in regard to fire safety and a lot of manufacturers in the US and wider world are drawn to fibreglass to meet this requirement. The reason for this is that the fibreglass acts as a thermal barrier and flame retardant against the materials inside the mattress, like certain foams that could catch on fire. The additional thermal insulation properties of fibreglass, helping to keep mattresses cool and warm all year round – have also led to its popularity. Fibreglass is a cheap material which suits the mass production commonly associated with mattress manufacture.

It is unlikely to be a problem if you bought your mattress in the UK as the UK fire retardant regulations and production regulations are different and it is illegal to use fibreglass in either the mattress core or its cover.

I hope this helps and if you would like any further information please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards

Michaela
