Fire retardant material?
Your website is very informative and helpful!
But still I have a question - are there fire retardant additives in any component of your artisan natural mattress or are the fire retardancy requirements fulfilled by the natural materials?
I am concerned about the safety of chemical fire retardants. Thank you >
Very good question Elaine,
All fabric ticking used on all mattresses have to be FR by law.
What this retardant is I do not actually know but I now intend to find out - any help would be appreciated.
I have also asked my suppliers to find out if any FR additives are used within upholstery.
As far as I am aware at this moment there are none.
Cotton as an upholstery component does not have any natural FR properties and therefore is used with wool (wool is naturally FR).
In days gone by Cotton was treated with Boric Acid as the FR but this treatment is no longer done.
I am going to do a post about Fire Retardancy and treatments shortly once I have all the info.
Incidentally there is a company who monitors and passes chemical additives as safe for human exposure - well worth skimming through the site Oeko Tex Site Here.
