A customer asked

Im looking to purchase a good quality pocket sprung mattress (double) for our 8 year old daughter (about 35kg) I'm looking for long term mattress purchase to last her a good few growing years. She has chosen a sprung slatted bed frame from OBC. I have been considering a John Lewis Essentials Collection 1200 Pocket Spring Mattress, and also a John Lewis Special 1200 Ortho Pocket Spring Mattress, or at the top budget the JL Natural Collection Hemp 4000 Pocket Spring Mattress. I believe the Natural collection is made by Spink Edgar and the Ortho by hypnos. Can you advise what comparable mattress you could offer, or shed any light on these mattresses. Kind regards

Hi Neil,

Many thanks for your enquiry.

The first thing to say is that we are unable to provide an opinion as to performance or suitability of any of the products you have listed because the published details of the construction and upholstery in terms of GSM (grams per square metre) are limited. This also makes providing a comparison impossible.

All of the products you refer to are made specifically for John Lewis by the two manufacturers you mention.

The other and perhaps more important consideration would be that buying something to suit an 8 year old is not going to suit that child in her teens as body weight and preferred sleeping conditions are likely to change as she gets older.

We would advise purchasing a good quality mattress for the short term and when your daughter reaches a more adult size, spending the money on a good quality product that will last into early adulthood.

Please view the Origins Comfort 1000, which has a standard medium spring unit accompanied by soft upholstery layers, best suited to someone of your daughter's weight. This will also allow her to grow with it as the spring unit will support body weights up to 16.5/17st.

We trust that this helps but if you require any further advice or guidance please call our office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards, John and Ryan.
