Help choosing a mattress please

I'm on the look out to replace our Dreams double 2000 sprung mattress as its about 10yrs old now and I've noticed some lower back pain in the mornings recently.

I am 5'8" 10.5 stone and my husband is about 13st, we both sleep on our sides and are used to a medium firm mattress with a micro fibre topper. I'm thinking we need something supportive with a medium tension but soft feel. The bed is a slightly sprung slatted bed (the type you can lift with storage underneath).

What would you suggest please? Budget is not limitless but I want something that will last us again. Thanks

Hi Rachel,

Thanks for getting in touch with us about choosing a new mattress. It can be a very confusing purchase, given most retailers won't tell you what's inside their models as we do. We have a handy guide here to give you all the basics for how to choose a new mattress.

Given your body weights, I would agree that you fall within the medium tension range in terms of support.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

I note that it is your intention to place the new mattress on a sprung slatted base and would advise that you place some form of barrier, usually in the form of this (3-5mm) MDF, over the slats to prevent any ridging occurring as a result of the mattress dipping into the gaps.

There are two products that I would suggest may be suitable and they are the Origins Pocket 1500 which has synthetic upholstery and the springs will provide an overall medium feel for you both, with comfort being provided by the upholstery layers.

The second product that I would suggest you look at is the Artisan Naturals , which contains 85% naturals upholstery layers, calico encased pocket springs and is available in soft, medium and firm spring tensions.

The Origins Pocket 1500 comes with a 3 year manufacturers guarantee and the Artisan Naturals has a 10 year guarantee, however, with the right care and consideration, we expect both to last longer than the guarantee periods.

Please view both these products and then call our office for more specific advice as to suitability. We also have an infographic below which you can right click and save to help you when mattress shopping with the key things you need to bear in mind. We hope it is helpful.

Kind Regards Gary
