A customer asked

I just bought an antique bed -not repro- 1870s with french 'louis' style carvings on headboard & legs- at the foot it has just 2 carved low corner posts -[the continuing upwards of the hind legs]- up the height of the mattress appx [no footboard] -with slats -Its not delivered yet but it is measured will take a kingsize 150x200 cms one- [will double check on arrival] Now i am looking at mattresses -a minefield- main bedroom been full of loft boxes from moving -now being dealt with -now decorating main bedroom & fitting vintage velvet curtains & vintage wool carpet- Ive been sleeping last 2 yrs in spare room with wool carpet -but on a cheap foam orthopaedic single bed mattress 'firm' cost around £90- actually it is quite comfy but i do wake up headachey & bit dizzy quite often- though i am not usually an allergy sufferer at all-so just in case this is due to manmade materials fumes & to go with the spirit of the bed [but although they look nice not actually wanting to sleep on a traditional featherbed [like a very thick duvet covered with mattress ticking-]as it would have had then, -though i have slept on a real one yrs ago-, very bad for back---] To compromise. i want a natural materials mattress & i do i like a firm bed-but the top priced ones -on lovely websites with pics of sheep etc -seem v expensive & beyond my budget -[which unfortunately was overspent on the bed]-& the natural mattress technical aspects v hard to grasp from reading the accompanying info- I would rather the 'skeleton' was good & well constructed & maybe with fairly basic stuffing & had a cover made of natural materials -& maybe add a padded topper of some sort later for more comfort - rather than get a poorer skeleton at v high price because of all the wonderful stuffing- also i dont understand the pros & cons of Natural Latex or if it gives off organic chemical fumes like memory foam- [i bought 2 memoryfoam dog cushions & now am bit scared to let the dogs sleep on them- [they are top showdogs so dogs waking up dizzy is not an option..] you seem very knowledgeable re comparing different products -can you advise me please?

PS: i thought i had it vaguely worked out & thinking about your artisan range--but then luckily read here about mattress getting damaged going round bend of stairwell-- i have such a low narrow stairwell which drastically cuts down my options --what can you suggest in view of this & the above message?

Thanks Delia.

Hi Delia.

Thank you for your enquiry.  When reading through your comment I was thinking that The Artisan range would be suitable for you (obviously tailored to your own personal bodyweight etc). The use of a topper/comforter may be beneficial as you will be tailoring the comfort to adapt to your personal preference over the lifespan of the mattress. The quality of the calico springs are the best you can get - so the skeleton as you call it is indeed without compromise.

Access is of course quite important. However, we seldom have problems with KS mattresses. In any event, the zip and link option can overcome any difficulties with low overhangs.

Latex core 18cm

Latex is a minefield. We have been trying to get the nitty-gritty on all the variances of this product for years. It was only recently that an unfortunate 'slip of the tongue' from a manufacturer alerted us to the fact that some latex products [promoted as 100% natural latex] comprises of 60% latex and 40% synthetic latex. There is also a higher quality 85% latex and 15% synthetic latex mix.

Finally, I'm afraid I have no explanation for your dizzy spells / headaches. Some people are overly sensitive to polyurethane foam off-gassing but it is unlikely that your mattress (age 2yrs +) is the cause - Off-gassing becomes stable after about 6 months or so - BUT - if your mattress has become contaminated with bacteria / damp [fungus], the toxins given off could be the cause.

When you are ready for your mattress please contact the office on 0161 437 4419 and we will go through all the options with you.

Kind Regards
