How long will it take to get used to new mattress?

A customer asked

Hi. After many months of getting out of bed feeling like I'd been hit by a truck, I have recently bought a new mattress. After lying (briefly) on plenty of different mattresses, my partner and I chose the John Lewis Ortho 1400 - partly because it felt like a Premier Inn bed on which we had slept very well. We've had the mattress for a few days now and, while it is infinitely better than what we had before, we are both feeling the mattress to be a little too firm. My questions are as follows: will we accustom ourselves to the new firmer feel?

If not, are we better returning the mattress (JL gives us 90 days) and exchanging it for something a little softer, or buying a mattress topper?

My tendency is towards the latter, given that this may increase the life of the mattress, but I'd welcome your thoughts. Many thanks. Pete

Hi Pete,

Thank you for your question on how long it takes to get used to a new mattress.

We always advise that with a new mattress it can take 30-60 days to fully get used to it.

A new mattress is a bit like a new pair of shoes. We recommend a good 30 days before making your final decision on whether the model is right for you.

It's after this time period you will know whether the mattress is the right firmness, provided by the comfort layers, not the spring tension.

The mattress spring tension should always be chosen on your body weight alone. Not the comfort you’re looking for.

If you pick the pocket spring tension alone to provide the feel of the mattress by mistake the issue you quickly run into is either a complete lack of support or a mattress that’s providing to much support. Both of these lead to awkward uncomfortable sleeping positions during the night.

The mattress tension or comfort feel always comes from the fibres placed on top of the pocket spring or other support element of the mattress.

Different fibres provide different feels in a mattress comfort layer. The table below shows both the price point and the firmness of mattress fibres. This should help you identify what type of mattress will best suit your sleeping preference, Ie if you like a soft feel and a side sleeper then choose softer feel fibres. If you're a back sleeper you will need slightly firmer feeling fibres so choose those that offer more support like horsehair or coir.

Upholstery Layer Fibre Type How it will feel? Price Point
Polyester Synthetic Soft Cheap
White Fibre Synthetic Soft/Medium Cheap
Recycled Fibre / Eco Fibre Synthetic Medium Cheap

If you're looking for a true medium feel mattress to replace the firmer John Lewis mattress or Premier Inn model from Hypnos then have a look at our Origins Pocket 1500 model, our best seller. This two sided mattress suits sleepers of 9-16 stone in the medium tension spring or sleepers 17 stone and above from the firmer spring.

It’s progressive enough to accommodate a front or side sleeper. It will allow more of a soft sink in the very top layer than the Sealy mattress before medium support lower down the upholstery layers. It’s also two-sided so can be turned and rotated each month to extend the lifespan compared to one-sided models.

Origins Pocket 1500 Mattress

1: 300GSM WOOL
2: 750GSM VERY SOFT POLYESTER
3: 500GSM POLYESTER PAD
4: ONE INCH FOAM INSULATOR LAYER
5: 1500 SPUN BOND POCKET SPRINGS
TOTAL: 1550GSM
DEPTH 30-33CM

As this is a 2 sided mattress we recommend you turn it each month to help even out natural settlement and get the very longest lifespan out of this hand made mattress. You can read our mattress care guide here to help.

We hope that helps and gives you further mattress buying guidance. It may be best to give us a call to discuss further to make sure we’re meeting all your requirements and you can either order online or over the phone when you’re ready.
