I'm not sure what type of mattress would be best for me.

Hi, I have been sleeping on a Tempur mattress for a couple of years now, and although in general I find it very comfortable, I get very hot in the night and when my partner is in the bed with me ( I weigh 8.5 stone, he weighs approx 13-14stone)I find myself slightly rolling towards him which aggravates my lower back. So we are thinking about buying a firmer mattress and recently slept on a friend's medium firm micro-coil mattress, but it was too firm and gave me hip and back pain. I sleep on my sides, back and stomach, and am not sure what sort of mattress we need. Incidentally, my partner loves the Tempur mattress, but I am tired of waking up with lower back issues.

Hi Jane,

Thank you for contacting us.

I am sorry to hear of the problems you are experiencing with your current mattress, unfortunately, memory foam is notorious for heat retention, which makes it unsuitable for many people. In addition, it can feel like you are climbing out of a hole when trying to change position during the night because it takes quite a while to return to shape.

Given you particular body weights, I would recommend that you go for a split spring tension mattress, soft for you and medium for your partner. A medium spring will feel too firm for you as your body weight is not sufficient to use the spring correctly, which is why I would suggest the soft spring for you.  It is the springs within the mattress which gives you the support. Split tension mattresses are only available in our Artisan range from king size and above in either a one piece or a zip and link. Zip and links are usually selected where access to the bedroom is restricted.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

Please view the Artisan Naturals, Artisan Bespoke 004 and Artisan Bespoke, all of which can be selected with the split tension referred to and all of which contain natural upholstery layers.  The Artisan Naturals and the Artisan Bespoke 004 both feel very similar and have an overall medium comfort layer meaning that the mattress is neither too soft nor too firm.  The difference between the two mattresses is the amount of natural fillings in each with the Naturals have 85% natural fillings and the Bespoke 004 having 100% natural fillings.   The Artisan Bespoke is actually the firmest mattress that we make and may be a little too firm for you in the comfort layers.

Once you have viewed these products, please call our office on 0161 437 4419 for specific advice as to suitability.

Kind regards Julie
