I have a firm mattress and I wake in the night with pain in my shoulder and hip. Would I be better off with a softer mattress. Toppers don’t really work. I am 8st 10lbs.

Hi Felicity,

Thank you for your questions. The pain in your shoulder and hip is pressure point pain from the upholstery layers of your current mattress being too firm. We do not recommend firm upholstery for side sleepers for this reason.

The upholstery layers, also known as comfort layers, should be either soft or medium depending on your comfort preferences. Side sleepers need to have cushioning so that their shoulders and hips can push into the top layers even if you prefer a more supportive feel. Softer upholstery layers, such as wool and cotton, allow these areas of the body to sink into the mattress and prevent the pressure point pain you are experiencing now. However, we would recommend that these soft layers be supported by other fibres, such as the horsetail and horsehair we have used in the Artisan Luxury mattress, to stop them from compressing too much.

What is the spring tension of your current mattress? We discontinued the soft spring tension some time ago as many customers of lighter body weights than yourself did not find them supportive enough and returned the mattresses to us. At your body weight, we would pair you with the medium spring tension to give you the correct support.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

Given your very light body weight, even a soft upholstery mattress may feel too firm as you will not make as much impression into the upholstery layers as someone with a higher body weight and may still need to add a mattress topper for additional comfort. We recommend trying a mattress for a few weeks to get a good feel for the upholstery layers and then adding a mattress topper if you find it too firm. We also recommend like for like fibres for a mattress topper which means if you have a natural fibre mattress then add a natural fibre topper such as wool or cotton, if you have a foam mattress then a soft density latex topper would be best.

I hope this helps and if you would like any further information please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards
Michaela
