Is the Artisan Bespoke 004 the same as the Vi-Spring Regal Superb

A customer asked

You state that the closest comparable model you can find to the Artisan Bespoke 004 is The Vi Spring Regal Superb. This is easy to understand because the difference between the two is that the Bespoke 004 does not have wool blended with the horse tail and it has the addition of the bamboo layer and extra 300 gsm of wool and cotton in the top layer.
However, you also state that the nearest comparable model you can find to the Artisan Luxury is the Vi Spring Devonshire in terms of comfort. This is harder for me to understand because although you do specify “in terms of comfort” the Artisan Luxury includes horse hair and horse tail, which the Devonshire does not, making it a considerably higher specification mattress. To my untrained eye I would think even the Regal Superb is a higher specification than the Devonshire.
I am torn between choosing the Bespoke 04 and the Luxury for my 16 stone 6 foot body, sleeping alone in a double bed. Can you tell me which current John Lewis Vi Spring models would be closest to the Bespoke 04 and the Luxury because I cannot find the John Lewis models used is your Mattress comparison. Also, John Lewis uses different model names to Vi Spring.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for your question.

The Vi-spring models made for John Lewis are exclusive to them, and the specific details of the construction and upholstery are not available, which makes any form of comparison impossible.

In our Artisan range we say the closest comfort feel to the Artisan Bespoke 004 is the Vi spring Regal Superb, and the Artisan Luxury model is the Vi spring Devonshire. The main difference is that we put more upholstery in our Artisan mattresses than any of the comparable comfort feel Vi spring mattresses, but we use those models as a guide for how soft or firm the top upholstery layers feel.

The Artisan Bespoke 004 is a medium feel in the top upholstery layers i.e not too soft or too firm. The Artisan Luxury has the softest top upholstery layers we create, this is the mattress you will sink into the most.

At your height and body weight i would recommend a medium tension spring to give you the correct support level within the mattress.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

I hope that this helps,

Kind Regards Gary

I went to John Lewis yesterday and I am now more confused than ever. After laying on the beds for a couple of minutes I could feel little difference between any of them except for the fact that the cheapest soft mattress did feel a bit softer than the most expensive firm.

As for me telling the difference between an Artisan Natural, Bespoke 004 and a Luxury after a few minutes trial, I doubt it. I could not even detect if any of these beds were any better than my 30 year old Sleepeezee.

I will go for the 100% natural fibres (but I do not know why, it’s just intuition) so I have to decide between the Bespoke 004 and the Luxury.

The Luxury is supposed to be the softer of the two but I do not know why if they have the same top comfort layer.

Would I want it softer or would I even feel any difference. I do not know.

Hi Peter,

I would suggest you opt for the Artisan Bespoke 004 which will provide you with a medium feel and if necessary, after you have got used to it, apply a topper to soften  the overall feel, if needed. This is preferable to going for the softer overall feel of the Luxury, which cannot be firmed up if it feels too soft.

The Softness in the Artisan Luxury comes from the amount of upholstery and the types of layers used, so the Luxury model has 1000 g per side of the mattress more than the Artisan Bespoke 004 mattress, and 2 of those layers are pure wool layers, which are very soft.

If you require any further assistance please call the office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards Gary.
