John Lewis alternative

We recently (January) purchased a John Lewis LUXNC COTN 180ZL SP Mattress. Firm on my side and Med on my partner's side. I am 5ft 10, mainly a side sleeper and weigh 90kg. The mattress on the firm side (mine) started to settle quickly and within 5 weeks I had back pain. I rotated as it cant be turned and this helped for a little while and then it was noticeably softer in the spot around the hip area. We had two inspections and long and short is that, although they didn't admit to any fault, they are allowing us to send it back for a refund. From my research it seems that the best idea is a two sided mattress that we can turn and rotate and perhaps add a topper. I never had problems with the cheap mattresses I used to get supplied with a bed frame, only with this £1,500 mattress. My old mattress on my King size lasted 15 years. We have a super king now and it is heavily slatted (I changed for thicker slats with less distance) and we are now wanting to get a replacement. I have read comments and issues regarding memory foam, hybrid, pillow tops and i-gel and there seems to be a lot of gimmicks sold on the high st. My partner prefers medium and I prefer a slightly firmer mattress but not too firm as I am a side sleeper. Support that will not sag in one place (I realise there is a little settlement) and create a noticeable issue.

My thought process is another pocket spring (although I am wary) that is firm and then a topper of latex or foam that will soften the initial feel.

Thoughts?

Hi Kevin,

Thank you for your question. The John Lewis Luxury Natural Collection Egyptian Cotton 5750 mattress is a one sided mattress that can only be rotated. This means the upholstery layers, especially where your hips are do not get time to rest and regain loft. All mattresses will settle where you lie the most. The upholstery layers of a new mattress are compacted and it takes the customer sleeping and moving around on the mattress to soften them to their described level. As creatures of habit, we tend to lie in the same position. This means that the upholstery layers under us settle as they should but this leaves the surrounding upholstery layers like new.

Your John Lewis mattress contains Cotton, Wool, Linen and Hemp along with micro HD springs which would give the mattress a medium level of comfort. We do not recommend micro HD springs as these offer nothing in support but do take up space where more luxurious upholstery layers could be. The level of comfort you require depends on your sleep positions and comfort preferences. We would not recommend anything too firm in the upholstery layers so as not to cause pressure pains in your shoulders and your hips. When a couple have different comfort preferences we recommend the firmer option which can be softened for the other partner with a separate mattress topper on their side as you can not firm up a mattress that is too soft. We would always recommend trying a mattress for a month or so so that you can get a true feel for the upholstery layers and only add a mattress topper for additional comfort. Given your comfort preferences, I would recommend either the Artisan Latex which is a little firmer than a true medium or the Artisan 1500 which has a firmer medium level of comfort.

Given your height and body weight, we would pair you with the medium spring tension. We would not put anyone on a firm spring tension unless they weighed at least 105 kg as under this body weight you do not weigh enough to activate the springs. It is the upholstery layers on top of the springs that determine how the mattress feels, not the spring tension.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

I hope this helps and if you would like any further information please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419,

Kind Regards

Michaela
