A customer asked

Hi there, I'm thinking of buying a John Lewis Refresh 2 kingsize mattress. I'm 11 stone but find many mattresses too soft (hips sinking) or too 'springy/bouncy'. The refresh 2 felt just right in the shop and retails for £475 but I don't like the idea of a non-turn mattress. Can you recommend an alternative but comparable mattress from your stock?

Many thanks, Agnes

Hi Agnes.

In all fairness, I'm not that familiar with this model.

The Fillings Description [JL]; Layers of wool, bamboo fibre, natural cotton and white polyester fibre The retail price of £475 [Nov 2011] is particularly good for a 1000 pocket sprung mattress of sufficient quality John Lewis endorse with their name and reputation.

If you are looking for natural fibre you would need to look here at our Artisan Range

John Ryan By Design Artisan Naturals Vi Spring Regal Superb
1 1200gsm Blended British Fleece Wool and Cotton. 900gsm Blended real Shetland Isle Fleece Wool and Cotton
2 Hairproof Cambric Cover Hairproof Cambric Cover
3 1250gsm Rebound Poly Cotton 1200gsm long stranded Horsetail blended with British Fleece Wool
4 1500gsm 100% Pure Mohair 1000gsm Bonded British Fleece Wool and Cotton
5 1600 Calico encased Pocket Springs [ 49mm ] [1.28mm ] 1720 Calico encased Pocket Springs [48mm ] [1.28mm ]
Total GSM 3950gsm 3100gsm

Do you have a two-sided equivalent and how much extra would it be? Reading back the above it "reads wrong" The point I am trying to make is, even though it's John Lewis a retailer of worth, you should not be afraid to question them. £500 is a lot of money to be spending on something that for all intents and purposes contain two wool cardi's, a swab of natural cotton - as opposed to unnatural, a plant and some honest to goodness white polyester fibres - although we don't know how much of course.

Finally, Agnes, The question you should be asking is...

can you get better for your money?

We think you can but until we [and by we I mean the consumer] knows exactly what is inside by weight [GSM] any kinds of direct comparison is relatively fruitless.

Please, let us know how you get on.

If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to contact the office on 0161 945 375

John and Ryan.
