Mattress and base choice?

Hi, im looking to buy both a new base and mattress. Myself and my boyfriend are currently buying our first house and so he has a small double that really just needs binning (I think it was an ebay bed and you can feel the springs in the matress!) , I currently have a platform top devane, not sure on spring tension, but I reckon it's probably a medium. The bed is still in good condition even being 9 years old, however it's a double and ideally we would like a king, plus it saves us transporting a bed half way across the country! My current double i've always thought too firm, and that I needed and prefer a softer mattress, and whilst my current bed is fine, as this is an investment it would be good to get it right. I'm 167cm, so not quite 5ft6 and just under 9 stone. While Stuart is 5ft10 and about 72/73kg (11ish stone). He seems to think he needs a medium mattress, although I'm m not sure he knows what he prefers given the state of the horrible old spring matress he currently has, and I know his back and shoulders always bother him! We are both mainly side sleepers and I move around a bit, as my left shoulder always aches if lying on it for too long. So in my own mind I think a soft matress would be ok, but any advice would be appreciated, as it might be medium more appropriate?
I've been looking at the sprung devane bases too rather than platform top, as given my past experience and me thinking I need a softer matress, I'm prepared to pay a bit more for the better base, and if it makes it more comfortable then that's 's a good thing too.
Last question, is it possible to select a specific delivery date, as because we're re moving house, at present we have no where to accept delivery until we move in (likely 11th August) so we would need to place an order soonish, but cannot guarantee when we'll be in.
Thank you in advance

Hello Iona,

Thank you for your question.

We have two ranges of pocket sprung mattresses, our Origins Range which have man made fillings and our Artisan Range which have natural fillings.  We pair our Origins mattresses with a solid divan base and our Artisan mattresses with a sprung divan base.

In the Origins Range, I would recommend having a look at our Origins Comfort 1000.  This mattress has man made fillings and a softer feel in the comfort layers although it is not a mattress that you will particularly sink into but is the softest mattress that we make in this range.

In the Artisan Range, the softest mattress that we make is the Artisan Luxury.  This mattress has 100% natural fillings and at your body weights, I would recommend a medium spring tension for you both.  If this mattress were to go onto a solid base, it would however firm the mattress up quite considerably.

John Ryan By Design Artisan Luxury Vi-Spring Devonshire
1 1200 GSM British Fleece Wool and Cotton 600gsm British Fleece Wool
2 Hairproof Cambric Cover 1700gsm Devonshire Fleece Wool
3 1200gsm Pure Horsehair NA
4 500gsm Pure Wool NA
5 1200gsm Pure Horsetail NA
6 500gsm Pure Wool 300gsm Bonded British Fleece Wool and Cotton
7 1476 Calico encased Pocket Springs [51mm] [1.42mm] 1326 Calico encased Pocket Springs [54mm] [1.52mm]
Total GSM 4600gsm 2600gsm

As you are both a little unsure though as to how you want the mattress to feel, our Artisan Range do have a similar feel to Vi Spring mattresses.   It may be preferable for you both to try the Vi Spring mattresses in a medium spring tension, to see how the different comfort layers actual feel.   I have attached a link which sets out the comparisons with regard to the various mattresses.

With regard to deliveries, we place all orders for the Origins Range on a Monday and you would have delivery within 3 weeks and we place all orders for the Artisan Range on a Thursday and you would have delivery within 4 weeks.   If you placed an Order and you were not quite ready for it, we can hold on to the Order for you.

It may be best for us to have a conversation with regard to what you are looking for in order that we give you the correct advice and so therefore please telephone the office on 0161 437 4419 at your convenience.

Kind regards Julie.
