Mattress company refuses to give me the GSM?

Hi,
I'd like to also add my thanks to the informative site which has helped me with better understanding the mattress world.
I have been looking at the JL special buy a king size mattress which is a Harrisson EdgarSpinks mattress for JL and comparing this to your Artisan Natural.
I have spoken with them and apparently the chairman has refused the company to disclose the GSM which seems a little shortsighted to me as it implies something to hide, given Vi do disclose it.
Nevertheless I have established as much as I can, the mattress we like(d) the "special buy 10000 yorkshire wool" has 1018 springs and the rest are the micro coils to make up the 10000 listed. The main pocket springs are encased (in this range 'special buy') in a polyester pocket not calico. (But the spring count confirms your information that a 1000 spring count is plenty and the rest is down to the quality of the mattress or GSM and in this case the small springs)
In common with your natural collection neither are 100% natural mattresses but are filled with 100%/85% natural product, however I understand your artisan range has the calico pocket springs, with the springs around the edge of a slightly stiffer grade, which makes sense to me.
The hand side stitching is three rows on the JL and two on yours
you're saying there is no noticeable difference between these?
I know the weight of the JL mattress in entry level hempure is 48kg and the one we liked is 62kg if that helps establish GSM?
My wife is 5'9" and 60kg and I'm 5'10 74kg
My main questions a): aside from price, what are the differences between your product and this one that would negatively impact on the quality of the mattress. for example is the 85% natural materials in your mattress offset by the fact your springs are housed in Calico and the JL isn't?
Personally I could feel the difference between the mattress with less micro coils and those with more and I felt the support and moulding to the body was best for me in the 3 mattresses from 10000 - 14000.
b)Without these additional micro coils in your mattress will I acheive a similar effect simply by the possibly greater GSM of your mattresses material content?
Finally I compared the JL to the Vi in the same show room and despite the Vi being 50% more expensive I preferred the JL special buy 10000 Yorkshire to it.
It's a lot of money for us at the moment to find for this mattress but we see it as an investment. However we want to get the best value for our money but the quality and long term benefit the bed will give us in quality of sleep is the ultimate decider for the difference in price of yours and the JL model, yours being the cheaper price point.

This is not the first time we have been advised that the Chairman at Harrisons has refused to provide specific details in respect of the GSM in the upholstery layers. Without specific details it is impossible to compare the John Lewis mattress to any other product. The mattress-guide/" title="spring">spring count in our view is a red herring as you have clearly discerned that 1000 is sufficient to provide support in a king sized mattress. The Artisan Naturals has 1600 hand formed, six turn calico encased springs and whilst this is more than the 1000 referred to, all are of exactly the same specification. The inclusion of 10000 to 14000 springs, the greater majority of which are mini springs, in the John Lewis model is unlikely to be of any significant benefit, despite the assertions of Harrisons to the contrary.
Weight of the mattress does not enable us to guess what level of GSM are included in the mattress, although a great majority of the weight will be that of the springs. Whilst I cannot provide you with a comparison, I can confirm that unlike Harrisons, we are quite happy to disclose the content and in respect of value for money, the Artisan Naturals represents an excellent choice. This is in fact our best selling mattress and although it is only 85% natural in terms of upholstery, at least you know what volumes you are getting. With the John Lewis model the indications in respect of the fillings are far too general for anyone to make an informed decision as to quality or performance.
Whilst the Artisan Naturals is not comparable to the John Lewis Natural Collection it is comparable, in feel only, to the Vi-Spring Regal Superb and before making your final decision regarding purchase, please go and try this one before making a final decision regarding purchase.

We will go and try that mattress as you suggest. I did observe that the Vi didn’t seem to have much if any additional edge support.
From my conversation with Harrissons I did understand from them that the Coils were in Polyester to reach the price point so that aspect of cost must outweigh the 100% natural build up of the product. As this is a made for JL product I am guessing Harrissons own brand, range of 100% natural mattresses may cost more and include Calico pockets, therefor your product would appear to offer greater value for money on this basis alone.
I had hoped that the weight of the mattress would enable a rough indication of the GSM of the material taking away the approximate weight of the coils.
One final observation, I liked the firm Tempur mattress in so much as it molded to the body but i don’t like any other aspect of it, the particular JL model we liked seemed to mold somewhat similarly so it will be interesting to see how the Vi mattress you suggest compares.
