Mattress help for really bad back pain

A customer asked

Hiya, I purchased a memory foam mattress earlier this month. Unfortunately, due to a tiny budged, I was not able to afford the quality I wanted, especially as I weigh 14 stone. I decided on memory foam to help with my lower back pain (bad enough for morphine patches) and arthritis in my hips and knees. I only spent £119 (and as sad as that is I spent a year saving for it!!

Damn being on a low income). I know you get what you pay for, but I got the last mattress I had for a similar price and have had no problems with it. Anyway, I find during the night I have sunk down to the bottom, to the extent that I can feel the bed base. Unfortunately, this pulls my spine out of alignment and causes significant pain. It is now 4.37am and I have been up for over an hour because the pain got bad enough to wake me up. I only purchased the bed because it had some good reviews. Is this something I will just have to live with until I can afford another one?

I can't keep rotating this mattress in the middle of the night just to try and get some relief!!

What makes it worse is that after my first night on the bed I woke up pain free for the first time in years, and I had forgotten what it felt like. >

Hi Hayley,

Thank you for your question.

There is nothing wrong with a foam mattress for £120 or so but, it is unlikely it will be able to give you what you require without any form of DIY alterations.

In your case I would have recommended you complement this particular mattress with additional layers of cushioning to ease your pain.

It's worth pointing out that mattresses within this price range can only offer a low density of support - hence the reason you are sinking through to your base.

To add additional cushioning (toppers) you may find that your current mattress does not have the capability of being able to offer the support you require but unfortunately without adequate budget, your best option is to try and remedy what you have.

Before you go to any more expense I would play around by experimenting with duvets and suchlike to see if the addition of supplementary layers will have an effect on your sleep.

I hope this assists but please do not hesitate to telephone our office for further advice and information on 0161 437 4419.

Kind regards Julie
