Mattress sagging on both sides of the mattress

Comment Check Icon 1 answers Comment Icon 0 comments

I have a silent night naturally sourced wool mattress. It is a rotate only. After a few months of purchase both sleeping sides sagged and got worse. Rotated mattress and sagging started this end after a few weeks. Mattress replaced by seller and it has now sagged again after x1 month. I have been offered another replacement. Is this right to happen to a brand new mattress?

Hi Sian,

Thank you for your question. The problem with a one sided mattress is that you can not prolong the lifespan of the mattress by regularly turning the mattress over. The upholstery layers need time to rest to regain some loft which is what happens when you turn a two sided mattress over. Adding a separate mattress topper to a two sided mattress replicates a pillow top mattress.

When a mattress is constructed all of the upholstery layers are compacted and produce the domed area of a new mattress, this will eventually flatten out and be level with the piping. It will feel firmer for this reason and it will take you sleeping and moving around on the mattress to soften the upholstery layers.  As we are creatures of habit and tend to sleep in the same position night after night, the upholstery layers will settle where you lie the most and this is normal and expected. Utilising the whole of the sleep surface will help to even out the unused areas of the upholstery layers, if you are in the bed on your own then sleep in the middle and if you are watching TV in bed or reading a book, sitting in the middle will help to even out the settlement.

Has your mattress been inspected? Faulty settlement is when the mattress settles outside of industry tolerances. The amount of settlement expected depends on the type of upholstery layers and the length of time in use. The upholstery layers will settle the most in the first 6 months of use.

I hope this helps and if you would like any further information or to discuss your individual needs, please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards

Michaela
