Mattress Type for B&B

A customer asked

Hi, I've spent a long time researching the best type of mattress for my new B&B business but I'm more confused than ever. I require a double and a small double mattress for beds with wooden slats. Should I go for pocket sprung or memory foam or orthapedic? I think medium-firm mattresses would be best as my guests will obviously range in size and weight. But what type of mattress do you recommend? Many thanks.

Hi Louise,

Thank you for your question.

I would strongly advise against buying memory foam mattresses for your B&B as these can be very heat retentive and are only suited to a small number of people, despite all the hype in the adverts.

The mattress that I usually recommend for B&Bs and guest houses is the Origins Pocket Reflex 1000, which is suitable for a wide range of body weights and can be made in the sizes you require. If you are placing the mattresses on slatted bases, I would recommend that you place some form of barrier, usually in the form of thin (3-5mm) MDF over the slats to provide the mattresses with a uniform surface upon which to sit and to avoid ridging occurring as a result of the mattresses dipping into the gaps between the slats. These mattresses are double sided and should be turned and rotated once a month for the first 12 months to spread the wear and tear and utilise more of the sleep surfaces.

I trust that this helps, but if you require any further advice or guidance, please call our office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind regards Julie
